As part of its submission to the federal budget, the peak body for Australia’s capital city local governments the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors (CCCLM) is calling for more investment in housing.

With increased rates of rental stress and median house prices continuing to climb, Australia’s capital cities are continuing to be the epicentre of the housing affordability crisis.

As local governments have primary carriage for land use planning, it is critically important that the Australian and state and territory Governments work in partnership to unlock housing supply and support coordinated land use planning in our cities.

Given the significant housing supply challenges being experienced, our capital cities are some of the most proactive Councils nationally when it comes to development approvals and planning processes.

With an eye to the federal budget, other priorities from the CCCLM include community cohesion, more funding for climate and sustainability projects in our cities and infrastructure investment.Pre budget submission 2026
