The Council of Capital City Lord Mayors (CCCLM) welcomes the release this week of Australia’s new 5-year National Cultural Policy Revive.
Lord Mayors are pleased that Revive places First Nations culture and arts front and centre, recognising the unique and central role of First Nations peoples and culture in our society.
“We’re encouraged by the focus on recognising the importance of the artist as a worker and contributor to our national culture and economy. This supports what we have long known – the valuable role that creatives play in strengthening communities, improving health and wellbeing, engaging young people, supporting jobs, growing the economy and giving our cities a distinctive identity” said CCCLM Chair and Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp.
The CCCLM is also pleased that the new policy commits to improving cultural data and research to support good decision making across all levels of government.
“The CCCLM looks forward to working closely with the Federal Government to establish more affordable cultural spaces in our cities for the creative sector to develop and present work. Our cities are home to the majority of Australia’s major cultural, arts and entertainment precincts, as well as many individuals working in this sector. That’s why it’s vital that investment continues to make workspaces more affordable, better protect our cultural assets and improve the economic stability of artists.
“This policy provides a firm footing for the future of Australia’s culture and the arts sector–and we look forward to working with the Federal Government and our State and Territory counterparts to deliver these positive measures.”
