The City of Sydney is a capital city council which is responsible for the commercial, financial and cultural hub of the greater Sydney area. The city community includes around 150,000 residents, 350,000 workers and more than 450,000 daily visitors, as well as other government agencies, arts and cultural organisations and community based service providers.     Clover Moore MP is the first popularly elected female Lord Mayor of Sydney. She is an Independent and was elected in March 2004 for a four year term. Ms Moore is also a Member of Parliament in the State Government of NSW, currently serving her fifth term in the Legislative Assembly.
The Lord Mayor's vision for Sydney includes enhancement of its international reputation as a liveable city, a world class tourist destination and a location for regional business headquarters. She is an advocate for better public transport, including an expanded light rail system throughout the city, increased parks and green spaces, and developing Sydney as an environmentally sustainable city.
As Australia's only global City, Sydney has an important role, both here and overseas, and is the economic engine for the rest of Sydney, NSW and the nation.
With the majority of Australia's population living in its capital cities Ms Moore is committed to ensuring that State and Federal government policy adequately reflects our city's needs.
The Lord Mayor is responsbile for the City of Sydney Local Government Area (LGA), which is the fastest-growing LGA in New South Wales. It covers 26 sq km and includes the central business district which is the commercial, retail and tourist heart of Australia. Ms Moore is very conscious of balancing the expectations, needs and interests of the various constituencies, the greater business focus in the CBD and the pride and ownership all Sydneysiders have in Sydney as Australia's leading city.
