Lord Mayors host cities roundtable discussion in Canberra

The Lord Mayors of Australia’s capital cities are hosting a discussion with Australia’s peak industry associations in Canberra tomorrow to pursue a national conversation about our Australian cities.

Discussions will focus particularly on the role of the Federal Government in securing the productive, sustainable and liveable future of Australia’s cities. The aim being to explore the Gillard Government’s Our Cities, Our Future – A National Urban Policy and identify priority actions.

Australia’s cities are of national significance; our major cities are home to 3 in every 4 Australians and contribute nearly 80 per cent of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Capital City Lord Mayors have long championed a Federal Government role in urban Australia.

Ultimately, the Lord Mayors want to see bipartisan political support for ongoing Federal Government involvement in urban Australia. Our cities are not solely the domain of state, territory and local governments. Partnerships across Australia’s three spheres of government are needed.

The Cities Roundtable Discussion will occur from 1.30pm – 5pm on Thursday 6 October 2011
