Lord Mayors join business & environment leaders to call for Federal focus on cities
An open letter to the major parties has called for the next Federal Government to act to secure the sustainable, liveable and productive future of Australia’s cities.
Australia’s Lord Mayors have joined forces with Australia’s business and environment leaders to call for active engagement in cities to deliver much needed infrastructure, help improve housing affordability and adapt to climate change.
Council of Capital City Lord Mayors chair, Lord Mayor of Darwin Graeme Sawyer said the Federal Government cannot turn its back on Australia’s cities.
“We’ve had a welcome interest in cities from the Federal Government, with the promise of an urban policy and the establishment of reviews into our capital cities metropolitan planning systems,” Lord Mayor Sawyer said.
“We need certainty that the next Federal Government will act to deliver tangible improvements in the quality of life for the 16 million people living in Australia’s major cities. We’re urging our Federal leaders not to turn their back on our cities.
“The Lord Mayors are in sync with Australia’s business and environment leaders in calling for Federal leadership and action in Australia’s cities.
“Together we are calling for delivery of a national urban policy, ongoing Federal investment in urban infrastructure and the completion of a Council of Australian Government’s (COAG) review into our metropolitan planning systems.”
